The Puppies are back with extraordinary, moving and funny stories from the formative months of their lives. This week, our puppies are simply pawesome! At Norwich airport, two Malinois puppies, Savas and Luna, have arrived for helicopter training. The pups have to be comfortable getting in and out of choppers for the pawesome job they are being prepared for: Anti-poaching dogs. They’ll eventually be dropped from choppers into the African Bush, where they’ll track and even apprehend poachers looking for rhino horn and elephant ivory. In the rolling hills of North Wales, Border Collie pup, Mickey, demonstrates his intelligence and an innate desire to herd as he learns the ropes of sheep herding. He has to master listening to his trainer, whilst watching the sheep; judging distance; and great self-control. After a few schoolboy errors, Mickey works in harmony with his trainer and experienced sheepdog, Uncle Taff, to successfully round up the flock, proving what a truly pawesome pup he is. Cocker Spaniel pups, Hailie and Hamlet are keen-as-mustard and will stop at nothing to succeed and please their trainers. They’re learning to apply their pawesome abilities to a task that dogs have performed in partnership with humans for thousands of years – retrieving prey. They are going to become competition gun dogs so must learn to be very astute and fast and have a fantastic understanding with their trainers. Now it’s time for their serious training to start, but it might take a little while to fully get the hang of this retrieval thing! Dalmation cross Rescue pup, Sage is deaf. But young puppies have a pawesome ability to adapt other senses to compensate. We’ll watch Sage grow up, as he learns how to sense movement through the ground and air and to watch his trainer for commands.
