The desert on Beijing's doorstep is regularly hit by sandstorms. Some experts predict that the Chinese capital could be threatened by deserts within a hundred years. In Montana, American agricultural productivity has an ecological and human cost. Engineer Marc Dufumier explains how mechanisation is undermining the natural balance. In Brazil, agrofuels have made it possible to reduce dependence on oil, cut urban air pollution and even limit greenhouse gas emissions.
