E12 | Extraordinary Dogs | The Uncommon Nose

This program is not currently available

In Malaysia millions of DVD's are illegally duplicated every year. To combat the problem authorities have come up with an altogether different solution - a Black Labrador named Paddy. He is trained to detect the odor of polycarbonate, a chemical used in the manufacture of DVD's. We'll join Paddy and the team on a raid and find out why his sense of smell is such a valuable asset. Springer Spaniel Sam works as part of the East Sussex Fire and Rescue service. He is one of the UKs leading fire investigation dogs and is trained to search a fire scene and identify if any flammable liquids have been used to accelerate the fire. We'll put Sam's nose to the test, and join him and handler Sarah out on duty. Year-old German Shepherd Dog "Eros" and his handler Hidehiro Murase work for Japan's "Rescue Dog Trainer's Association". They are a mission readiness tested and approved rescue dog team, the only one in Japan certified by the International Rescue Dog Organisation or IRO. This means that they can be called upon in the event of a disaster anywhere in the world. We join Eros and Hidehiro as they take part in a regular training exercise.
