E02 | Health Investigation | Dietary Supplements: Healthy Dose of Misinformation?

Dietary Supplements: Helpful or Dangerous? They’re flooding the shelves of pharmacies, supermarkets, and health food stores. Brewer’s yeast, vitamins, passionflower, spirulina… More than one in two French people have already taken dietary supplements to get back in shape or stay healthy. A capsule for memory, a tablet for stress, a herbal detox programme… The promises made by dietary supplements are tempting. These products are guaranteed to be 100 per cent natural, which stands in stark contrast to the chemical image associated with medicines. But are they really effective and safe? The range of dietary supplements on offer is vast, with over 150 million packs sold in France every year. As summer approaches, many female consumers turn to slimming products. A flat tummy, slimmer legs… Their promises sound too good to be true, but are they actually effective for weight loss? Drug interactions, serious side effects… Dietary supplements can sometimes be dangerous, particularly as their quality and distribution channels raise concerns. At health and wellness fairs or online, these products may be counterfeit or sold by quacks. Despite these warnings, the dietary supplement market seems to have a bright future ahead of it. Yet most scientific studies confirm that when it comes to boosting your health, nothing beats a healthy and varied diet. That’s easy to say, but in practice, which foods should you prioritise?
